Abstract
The research paper tackling the most important journey, which described the Arab Mashreq at the end of the nineteenth century, that is to say, the journey of the most important figure that effected the Arab Mashreq, and some interested people considered the German traveler Max von Oppenheim as a semi-authentic copy of Lawrence of Arabia. Oppenheim is a researcher specialized in history and archaeology. In his journey from the Mediterranean to the Arab Gulf, he went by way of Mosul. As for Mosul, he came to it via Syria, Nisebin and areas of north-west Mosul, and departed it to Baghdad. During his stay in Mosul, he described in his book some areas that lay to the south of Mosul.
Whoever reads Oppenheim's travel book will find a lot of geographical information. He described the road, the ground nature, rivers, valleys. He also measured the distance between the prominent towns and villages. It is worthy of note that he made use of previous travelers' maps such as Anne Isabella Noel Blunt and Carl Eduard Sachau, and he consulted some Orientalists to specifying positions of some ancient cities, which he described precisely, like such as Baainatha (Abu-Wajnah).
